The concept of outsourcing has been around for many years - outsourcing of payroll services started as early as late 1960s. Customer support through independent voice call centers is also several decades old. With the gradual increase in sophistication of IT solutions and the increasing trend towards outsourcing, BPO services have steadily increased in size and scope.

It is the rise of the Internet and communication technologies in the last 3-5 years and the increased focus on core competence and cost reduction that has given momentum to BPO on a scale not seen earlier. In the last 2 years, several multi-hundred million-dollar BPO contracts of 5 to 10 year durations have been signed.

According to Gartner-Dataquest, the global BPO market is expected to increase from US $125 billion in 2000 to US $301 billion in 2004. In comparison, PriceWaterhouse Coopers estimates the global BPO market to be US $200 billion in 2004. United States comprises around 50% of the global BPO market.
